6 Simple Ways to Make Your Home Look More Cohesive | Julie Khuu
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Channel! I’m Julie, and today you are joining me for a super special video. We are in Palm Springs, and we are actually here to celebrate my belated birthday. We’ve got the entire crew here, including my family and friends, and we’ve rented out this beautiful, luxurious property called Casa Roca. I cannot wait to give you the full home tour, so let’s get started!
The luxury rental we are staying in is absolutely stunning. You can tell how much love and attention to detail went into creating this space. It has a high-end, luxurious boho desert style that is just beautiful. Palm Springs is one of my favorite local staycation spots because of its dry desert heat and moody ambiance. When I saw Casa Roca, I knew I had to film it for you.
Upon entering the two-story space, you are greeted by multiple lounge areas. There’s an informal, casual parlor on the left with a billiards table, and around the corner, there’s a little bar niche with another sitting area. The rental property also features a fully equipped chef’s kitchen complete with a super cute and convenient coffee station. There are separate hallways leading to various private bedrooms, some with shared bathrooms and others with ensuite ones. Every interior room comes complete with a king-sized bed, a smart TV, and beautiful luxury finishes.
The great room features a stunning dining table and a large, massive sitting area. One of the best design choices in open-plan spaces like this is to help demarcate zones and break up seating groups using furniture. In the living room, they styled it with a huge curved sofa that can be separated into smaller areas to lounge in. The view from the great room is absolutely incredible, with a huge saltwater pool, a slide, water fountains, and various recreational activities. There’s even an outdoor grill area perfect for barbecuing for the whole family.
Heading up to the second level, there are four bedrooms and three bathrooms. One of the bedrooms is a primary suite with an ensuite bathroom, a Cal King bed, and a cozy sitting area. The other bedrooms feature a single King bed and two single King-sized beds. My favorite room in the home is the super large and spacious A-frame attic space. It’s perfect for growing teens or a large family. In fact, we actually stuffed all the kids in this room, and it served as the perfect playroom for them.
Now that you’ve seen this beautiful rental property, let’s talk about how you can apply some of these design tips to make your home look more cohesive. Here are six simple ways to achieve a cohesive look in your space:
1. Start with a color palette
One of the first steps in creating a cohesive home is to start with a color palette. Choose four to five anchoring colors and mix monochromatic hues with a more pigmented accent color. In the Palm Springs rental, they predominantly used neutrals like blacks, browns, whites, creams, ivories, and tans, with pink as the accent color. Although pink isn’t traditionally considered neutral, desaturating it into different tones and tints makes it versatile and blend seamlessly across different rooms.
2. Repeat elements from room to room
To create a cohesive design, repeat elements from room to room. The Palm Springs rental achieved this by using a mix of natural and organic materials like jute, wool, and sisal rugs. They also incorporated repeated patterns in area rugs and throw pillows, as well as consistent finishes like different types of wood, metal accents, and leather finishes. By repeating these elements, each room ties back to the overall design of the home.
3. Use lighting to create ambiance
Layered lighting is key in creating a moody ambiance in each room. The rental property utilized different lighting fixtures like chandeliers, pendant lights, and table lamps to add depth and create different moods throughout the space. Whether you want a soft and romantic ambiance or a brighter and more energetic atmosphere, lighting plays a crucial role in setting the tone of a room.
4. Style with artwork and accessories
To add personality and style to your space, don’t forget about artwork and accessories. In the Palm Springs rental, they styled the rooms with artwork, decorative pillows, and faux plants. These elements not only enhance the visual appeal of each room but also tie back to the cohesive design through the use of color, pattern, and texture.
5. Anchor seating areas with area rugs
Area rugs are a great tool for defining and creating different seating areas in open-plan spaces. They help demarcate zones and break up furniture groupings, giving each area a clear purpose. When choosing area rugs, consider the contrast with your furniture. If your furniture is darker, go for a lighter area rug, and vice versa. For neutral or monochromatic furniture, opt for a patterned area rug that incorporates all the colors of the room.
6. Mix and match finishes and metals
Finally, don’t be afraid to mix and match finishes and metals. The Palm Springs rental property showcased a variety of different finishes, from natural stone to wood and metal accents. By combining these different textures and materials, each room feels cohesive while still having its own unique character. Experiment with different finishes in your own home and see how they can bring new life to your space.
By following these six simple tips, you can make your home look more cohesive and stylish. Take inspiration from the Palm Springs rental and apply these design principles to create a space that reflects your personal style. Remember, design is all about expressing yourself and creating a home that brings you joy and comfort. Happy decorating!
